Men's basketball team wins consolation title at Monterey

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team captured the consolation title at the Monterey Bay Classis on Saturday.

The Lasers won two of three games, including defeating Hartnell, 58-45, Saturday.

IVC trailed, 32-26, at the half, but held Hartnell to just 13 points in the second half en route to the come-from-behind win.

Irvine Valley sophomore post player Jesse Stines was named to the all-tournament team.

He finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way.

Freshman guard Ammon Allan added 15 points eight rebounds and three assists, sophomore guard David Ogunlade chipped in eight points and sophomore wing Marcus Carter had seven points.

The Lasers moved into the consolation final with an exciting, 59-57, win at the buzzer on Friday.

The game was tied at 57 in the closing seconds. Ogunlade drove to the basket and his shot was just off the mark.

But freshman forward Ethan Tauber grabbed the rebound and beat the horn with a putback to give th Lasers the two-point win.

Stines and Allan each finished with 10 points. Stines also had 13 rebounds and Allan added six rebounds.

Sophomore wing Jose Acevedo and Ogunlade each contributed nine points, Tauber had eight points and 10 rebounds and Carter added seven points.

IVC started the tournament last Thursday against one of the top teams from Northern California in Chabot.

The Lasers stayed with Chabot most of the way and even tied the score with under four minutes left.

But Chabot had a little too much and pulled away for a 77-67 win.

Carter led IVC with 15 points, Allan had 12 points and seven rebounds and Ogunlade chipped in nine points, five rebounds and three assists.

Chabot went on to win the tournament.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 6-2 overall. The Lasers play again this Friday at Mt. SAC at 5 p.m.
